Understanding Steroid Injections for Pain Management

Our providers at Texas Pain Alternative are devoted to keeping the residents of Allen, TX, and surrounding communities pain-free with steroid injections and other pain management skills. Our providers are here to help you understand how steroid injections can be beneficial in managing your for pain.

Understanding Steroids for Pain Management

Steroids are artificial, anti-inflammatory drugs that work like hormones. We use cortisone to target painful areas by injecting them directly into and/or around the affected sites. Steroids decrease or rid of pain in arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, and other inflammation in the body.

Steroid injections are ideal for the joint pains in the shoulder, knee, hips, ankle, neck, back, and small joints of the jaw, hands, and feet. They are also used for pain conditions involving soft tissues to include trigger fingers, trigger points (“knots”), and areas surrounding tendons (i.e. tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow). They can provide longer lasting pain relief.  However, relief is not always permanent especially if the injury does not heal and/or involved areas have extensive damage.

Our providers can determine if you’re a candidate for these injections.  They will also be able to determine when it is safe to provide additional steroid injections.  Side effects of steroids may result in steroid allergy, adversely affect sugar levels in diabetic patients, cause thinned and lightened skin at the injection site, and weaken surrounding soft tissues especially tendons and ligaments.
